Lesson 5: Mechanical Aids and Equipment
Mechanical Aids and Equipment
Mechanical aids reduce the force required during manual tasks. Examples include hoists, slings, slide sheets, transfer boards, wheelchairs and trolleys. Equipment should match the task, environment and individual care plan.
Before using equipment
-
Confirm that you are trained and authorised to use it.
-
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and workplace procedures.
-
Check that the equipment is suitable for the person or load.
-
Inspect it for damage, wear, missing parts or low battery power.
-
Check that maintenance and safety inspections are current.
-
Ensure enough space is available to operate it safely.
-
Obtain assistance when required by the care plan or procedure.
When using a hoist, select the correct compatible sling according to the care plan and manufacturer’s instructions. Check the sling, attachments and controls before beginning. Explain the procedure to the person and maintain their comfort, privacy and dignity.
Safe equipment use
-
Prepare and position the equipment correctly.
-
Apply brakes only when directed by the equipment instructions.
-
Keep hands, feet, clothing and obstacles clear of moving parts.
-
Communicate with the person and assisting workers.
-
Move equipment smoothly and remain attentive throughout the task.
-
Never exceed the equipment’s stated safe working load.
-
Do not leave a supported person unattended unless the procedure permits it.
Faulty equipment
Do not use equipment that is damaged, unstable, overdue for inspection or operating incorrectly. Remove it from service according to workplace procedures, label or isolate it where required and report the fault immediately.
Example
Before transferring a client, a worker notices damage to the required sling. The worker does not continue with the transfer. They keep the client safe, report the fault and obtain an approved replacement sling.
Mechanical aids do not remove every risk. Workers must still assess each task and follow training, care plans, manufacturer instructions and applicable safety requirements.
